Until laser, physicians removed acne scars with Trichloroacetic Acid, a medium depth chemical peel, which creates a controlled burn of the epidermis (the outer layers of skin). With each peel a portion of damaged skin is exfoliated, or peeled away.
We have about 10 layers of skin in 3 sections. Each month a new layer of skin is created at the bottom section which causes the top layer to naturally exfoliate or flake off, un-noticed by the naked eye. Each month a new layer is created beneath while the old outer layer exfoliates. That is why tans seem to fade. They don't actually fade, they slowly flake away.
TCA increases the exfoliation in surface and deeper layers of skin and causes the scarred or discolored skin to peel away. The new skin is smooth and fresh. Subsequent TCA treatments may be required for deeper acne scars or injury scars. Each TCA peel improves the appearance.
