A). Acne: DO NOT DO

There are at least 3 good reasons to NOT lance, pop or squeeze a blemish:

  1. Dirt and bacteria from your fingernails can spread into your pores and around the original blemish causing a bigger infection;
  2. Inflaming the initial blemish spot can cause the bacteria to spread deeper into the skin and cause a cyst that will hang around for a few weeks;
  3. Possible scarring and post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (brown spots).

B). Acne: CONTROL & CORRECT

PCA Skin Clinical Care Products Home Care Directions:

  • Cleanse. Cleansing your face twice daily (every morning and every evening cleanse twice each time) with a cleanser designed for Oily/Problem Skin. Alternate the PCA Skin pHaze 1 Oily/Problem cleanser (A.M.) with PCA Skin pHaze 31 BPO 5% Cleanser (P.M.). Do NOT scrub your face with a washcloth; apply about a dime size amount of cleanser to damp skin with fingertips; briefly and gently massage into a creamy lather. Rinse with warm water. Repeat cleansing and gently pat dry. Use a clean washcloth to pat dry each time!
  • Tone. Toning is useful because it reduces oiliness and removes any debris you might have missed while cleansing. PCA pHaze 2 Smoothing Toner helps refine pores and remove superficial dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and clear. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad, wipe gently (it may produce a slight tingle while damp), keep away from the eye area.
  • Moisturize. If you do not moisturize after cleansing and toning; your skin will feel a little dry and signal the sebaceous glands to produce MORE OIL to compensate for the dryness. For evening, PCA Skin pHaze 18 Clearskin is the best selection. This unique anti-bacterial hydrator helps to reduce inflammation, promote tissue healing, fight bacteria, and inhibit breakouts in oily and blemish-prone skin to promote a healthy, clear complexion. For daytime, PCA Skin pHaze 7 Protecting Hydrator SPF 25 will protect, nourish (contains vitamins B-5 and E) and it will leave the skin hydrated with a matte finish.
  • Exfoliate. PCA Skin pHaze 4 Gentle Exfoliant is a light and creamy cleansing scrub. Use it gently once per week.
  • Mask. PCA Skin pHaze 9 Purifying Mask is a mask like no other. Formulated using exotic ingredients such as algae from Israel, French red clay, red wine extract and vitamins E and A to nourish the skin and clear breakouts.

C). Acne: INFORMATION

Acne is a skin condition characterized by:

  • milia (whiteheads),
  • comedones (blackheads),
  • papules (red, tender bumps with no head)
  • pustules (inflamed, red circle with a white or yellow center)
  • nodules (large, hard bumps under the skin's surface, can be painful and sometimes last for months)
  • cysts (large, similar in appearance to a nodule but is pus-filled, painful)

Acne skin condition develops at any age but it is most common during the teenage years as the sebaceous glands (oil glands) are overactive at this stage. Inflammation of sebaceous glands under the surface of skin causes the secretion of oil on to the surface of the skin. The oil secretion, dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria then block the pores and start the development of acne condition.

Some of the factors that can worsen acne are:

  • Hormonal changes related to menstrual periods, pregnancy, birth control pills, or stress;
  • Certain drugs (such as steroids, testosterone, estrogen, etc.);
  • Touching, lancing, popping, squeezing and picking your blemishes;
  • Cleansing your face too often, leaving the skin dry, using harsh scrubbing agents and movements;
  • Cosmetics, Perfumed facial products, heavy creams and lotions designed for Dry Skin;
  • Sharing facial brushes, skin care products, makeup, towel/washcloth;
  • Excessive massage to the acne area;
  • Poor Diet (Try to eat the good stuff: vegetables {asparagus, broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables should be part of your daily diet}, nuts, seeds, lean meats, fish, olive oil, herbs and spices, fruits and whole grains)
