Accordions: Do your research!!
Why you shouldn't buy a used accordion on Ebay
There is a very big problem with buying a used accordion on Ebay: you don't have the chance to really check it out. Please see klezmusic's about me page, as there is a link to a great reference on evaluating old accordions(ebay policy forbids me linking directly to it from here). If you read it, you know there are few, if any, of these checks you can make from looking at pictures on listings. If you're interested in a used accordion to play, and aren't looking to spend a lot of money restoring it, ebay probably isn't the best place to start looking. There are several online resources that can point you to an accordion dealer in your area. Try some out. First, determine if you want a piano or diatonic (button) accordion. Then choose your tuning; do you want dry tuning (more of a piano-type sound) or wet (musette) tuning (more of an organ sound)?
If you do end up buying a used accordion on ebay, be safe! Try and buy from someone who sells a lot of accordions, someone reputable. Ask a lot of questions!
- Ask if there are any air leaks. These will cause a loss in compression and will be difficult to play.
- Ask how the unit has been cared for. This is important for older accordions, as heat can melt the wax inside that holds the reeds in place.
- Ask if there is any buzzing in the treble notes. This is something of an inconvenience, as it can learned on but not by any means used professionally.
- Ask if the bass keys stick or if they pop right back up. Slightly more important as it can affect the playability of the instrument
- Do the treble keys have a lot of clicking? This falls under the same catagory as a buzzing in the notes.
Happy bidding and good luck!!
