About Gold Filled Jewelry
Solid, or pure gold, is extremely difficult to find. Common varieties of gold are 18K, 14K and 10K. The K stands for Karat and is used to describe the percentage of gold an item actually contains. The higher the K, the higher the percentage of gold. 18K gold, for example contains 18 parts gold, and 6 parts additional metals making it 75% gold. The only "pure" gold is 24K gold.
18KT gold filled jewelry is an affordable alternative to gold. It is not a "cheap" alternative, but it does not cost hundreds of dollars per ounce as gold jewelry does. Gold filled jewelry is not the same as gold plated, electroplated, bonded or overlay jewelry. Gold filled is far superior to those based on the sheer amount of gold that is actually used to create the piece. Most "plated" jewelry uses only a few microns of gold and thus, it tarnishes, chips, and loses its color very quickly.
Gold filled jewelry, on the other hand, is regulated by the US government and consists of a thick layer of gold over a semi-precious metal such as sterling silver or rhodium (a member of the platinum family.) With proper care, gold filled jewelry can be treated as an heirloom piece and cherished for a lifetime.
