In 1985, Remco licensed and produced a set of 6" plastic figures of current and former stars of Verne Gagne's American Wrestling Association (AWA).These were known as the AWA All Stars. The biggest seller was the Battle Royal set, that included Ric Flair, with cloth sequined ring robe, Rick Martel, Baron Von Raschke, Larry Zbyszko, Curt Hennig,Greg Gagne, and referee Dick Woerhle. A small ring with a real canvas cover was included, featuring the AWA logo, and the battle royal set had a large, fake check for the winner !
These figures featured moveable arms and legs, and were more user friendly than the large, rubber LJN figures that were more popular at the time. Later sets featured the Freebirds, (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts), Jimmy Garvin, Precious, and Steve Regal, The Road Warriors and Paul Ellering,The Fabulous Ones (Stan Lane & Steve Keirn) The Long Riders, (Scott and Bill Irwin), Abdullah the Butcher, Carlos Colon, and a very rare Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty set. Some of the other figures that were pretty rare at the time were Stan Hansen, Jerry Blackwell, Nick Bockwinkel, and Scott Hall. The last line of these figures included some variant figures, and the addition of Shiek Adnan-Al Kaissie, Jim Brunzell, Doug Somers, Buddy Rose, and Nord the Barbarian.
These figures are highly prized by collectors today, due to their rarity, and the detail on some was pretty nice, featuring designs on their tights, and actual removable ring gear. Flair had a title belt, and it was an old NWA replica. These figures, mint on card, are a hot collectible, and it's always nice to find them loose in great shape.
The Rarest Figures : The Road Warriors, Ellering, Michaels & Janetty, Hansen, Hall, Somers & Rose, and Nord the Barbarian. These were pretty limited. Great collection to put together. Good luck, and happy Ebaying !!
