There is nothing more disappointing then waiting on line with cards in hand for hours to meet your favorite NASCAR driver or waiting for the returned cards you sent to the drivers shop only to receive an ugly autograph that has skipped and smeared.
UV COATING: Most trading cards from the early 90's to present have a high gloss UV coating on the front surface for protection from the elemements. Well as you know when a driver signs this surface with a Sharpie the marker skips, leaving bubbles and smudges and you are left with an ugly autograph.
SELECTION: The first thing you want to do is select a good card to be autographed. Make sure there is an area where you can see the autograph once you have it. A light background or area where the driver can sign it is best. I have seen cards with such dark backgrounds that you can not even see the autograph.
PREPARATION: Once you have the ideal cards to have autographed take a soft terry cloth or even a sock and lay the card on a hard flat surface. Push the card down firmly with the cloth to push any air out from under the card. The card will seem to stick to the table. Now with your index finger carefully rub the obvious area you wish to have signed on the card very firmly with the cloth until you feel the heat of friction on your finger tip. This usually takes about 10 seconds of firm rubbing to remove the coating from the area.
AVOID THIS BY FOLLOWING THE SIMPLE PROCEDURE ABOVE TO AVOID "UGLY" AUTOGRAPHS!
Follow these two very simple steps to avoid getting ugly skips and have clean, clear, valuable autographed cards for your collection, for re-sale, or display.
