You go to a lot of trouble, time and expense posting your items for sale. Then when bidding ends, there is someone from another country that has purchased your item. That is O.K. if you are selling items easily shipped by UPS or FedEx but what if they bought your lawn mower, car or piano?? Now I am not saying that all bogus bidding is coming from other countries, but a large percentage is. EBay touts the GLOBAL MARKET advantages, and does not adequately protect, by way of qualifying its bidders. That is your responsibility. Wait one minute..........My responsibility?
Well ......EBay is not doing anything, except perhaps offering sellers a discount on re listing your "Sold" (but not really) item. So what are a few tips to avoid this BIG problem without discouraging would be buyers:
1. If your item is local pick up only, make that VERY clear in your listing description. EBay has a place under "shipping" but make it even more clear in your ad.
2. If it is a valuable item, such as a car/truck/tractor/plane etc. you should probably exclude bidders with less than 10 positive buyer feedback . Let the zero and less than 10 score buyers build a reputation buying and paying on time for electronics and jewelry until their score means something to them and you.. State clearly in your ad that all bidders with less than 10 positive feedback, contact you before bidding. That alone scares off most deadbeat bidders.
3. If it is a local pick up item, have a potential buyer contact you about how they plan to pick up the item within a very short period after end of auction. 24 hours should be the maximum to make contact with a buyer.
4. State in you ad that an item must be picked up and paid for within a certain time period or will be re listed, and make it equally clear that you will leave a strike against all nonpaying bidders. Include a storage fee of $XX will be charged after 3,5,7 or ? days.
5. Include a shipping link to local trucking companies for the convenience of both parties. This avoids the "I had no idea how much they charge to ship elephants across county these days!" excuse for backing out of a purchase.
6. Yes! Make your item as attractive to buyers as possible, but avoid as many deadbeats, foreign or domestic, as possible also.
More to come................................
