THE BEST PENS TO USE WHEN GETTING AUTOGRAPHS
I have been collecting autographs in person now for about 7 years, One of the most important lessons I have learned is what type of pen / marker to have the celebrity / athlete use when signing your item.
Use the wrong type of pen / marker and the autograph can look terrible and even fade into nonexistance.
Below is the type of pen I have the celebrity / athlete use and the item.
-
Jerseys ( Best signed on the Number ) = Black or Silver Sharpie Or a fine point Silver Paint pen, I have found that a blue sharpie fades.
-
Magazines = Any Fine Point or Medium sized Sharpie, Color is up to you, Whatever you think will look the best. Keep in mind if the cover is mainly light or dark.
-
Baseballs = Ball Point pens, I have heard that blue is the best color.
-
Photos = Same as Magazines, Whichever color you think will look the best.
-
Basketballs = If you wish to use black, Use a black large Sharpie, Try not to use the chisel edge sharpie, As the celebrity / athlete has to hold it the right way to get a good auto. If you want to use Silver ( My choice on Basketballs ) use a Metallic Silver Paint pen, The ones I use are made by Elmers and can be brought in Art & Craft stores ( I buy mine at Michaels ).
-
Rubber Ducks = A lot of sports teams have been giving away rubber ducks in the likeness of certain players, I know of 2 companys that have made them. If you wish to get a Celebriduck signed, Dont use a blue sharpie, I have found that blue fades, I have not had any problems with Black or Silver sharpies. The other company that I know has made this promotional ducks is Sixteen 88, I only have one of these ducks and I know that Blue doesnt fade on the Sixteen 88 duck.
-
Bobblehead dolls = One of my main collections is signed Bobblehead dolls, I have had athletes use Black, Silver and blue sharpies with no problems.
-
Baseball Bats = If the bat isnt painted I prefer Black sharpie, If the bat is black, Silver sharpie looks really good.
- Trading cards = Most people prefer having the card signed using a blue sharpie, Personally I dont care if its blue, black or silver, To me it all depends on how dark the card is.
Some items such as the newer trading cards and Magazines need to be rubbed down before you get the item signed, This can be done by rubbing a soft dry cloth on the item just to get the shine out of the item which can cause bubbling in the autograph,
I hope that this guide helps you, Theres nothing worse then getting the autograph of your favorite Celebrity or Athlete only to find out that the autograph either comes out terrible, Fades or bubbles.
