Often called the "Rolls Royce" of Star Wars collectibles, Attakus is the producer and distributor of statues sculpted by Bombyx Studio. Attakus, based in Montreuil sous Bois, France, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.  The company has expanded to North America with Attakus America, based in Quebec, Canada. Their website now has twin subsites in both French and English. Their creations are uniquely made of "cold cast porcelain", not resin or poly-resin, which most other companies use as their media.

                         

     Each scultpure is hand-painted and comes from a very limited edition size of 1,500 "worldwide." I have used the quotes here because Lucas Film Licensing (who allows companies like Hasbro, Sideshow and Attakus to use images and names of SW characters as an "offically licensed product") later requested Attakus to distribute a separate "Japanes edition'" The Japanese ed. is limited to 200 pieces. Not all of the original statues were allowed to be released in Japan. These six (6) statues are specifically designated by italics on the checklist below.  Typically the international "limited edition" carries a higher value on secondary market, mainly because they are older and were considered to be the "original".

                                          

     Regardless of which edition, each statue is individually numbered and comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity. Also, a few of the statues had a smaller "Exclusive" edition size that is the TOTAL number of pieces released anywhere.  These do not a separate Japanese edition. The first Exclusive editions were two different versions of Salacious Crumb.  Attakus released 750 pieces of the Salacious Crumb with Jabba's Hookah Pipe and Bowl and 750 pieces Attakus' Salacious Crumb w/o Jabba's accessories.  Most recently is the Sandtrooper Sergeant Exclusive due out later this summer, with another limited release of 750 pieces. Attakus' Jabba the Hutt had a unique release of 750 International and 200 Japanese pieces.  Jabba is the largest and heaviest statue produced so far and is truly HUGE at 15.7" T x 27.6" L x 17" D and weighing 38 lbs.!  The rarest Attakus SW statue is a Exclusive Bronze version of Yoda, molded after the ESB version, and was extremely limited to 250 pieces! There were also 2 "never released" bronze prototypes of Vader and Leia.

                                      

     Attakus has begun distribution of Bombyx's second line of SW collectibles, the news-breaking "metal collection". These 4" pewter figures are individually hand painted with an edition size of 2500 each. They are designed in proportion to a two-part Millenium Falcon / Death Star Hall resin diorama which has been critically acclaimed and heralded as the modern "holy grail" of SW collecting. Limited to only 400 pieces each, when fully assembled this 6' LONG scene from Episode IV is awe inspiring and movie-realistic. It weighs over 200 lbs! Each part of the diorama includes a special certificate for a mail-away exclusive metal Luke Stormtrooper (MF) and Mouse Droid (DS Hall).

     I decided to write this guide because I have become fascinated with these statues. I have collected SW all my life and this year marks its 30th Anniversary. I am a devoted fan especially of Darth Vader and have collected as many Vaders as I could find to put in a separate displayed collection. I heard about the Attakus Darth Vader 1 and I thought purchasing this (on ebay as he was long sold out) single statue would be it. When I saw the beauty, detail, realism and craftmanship of this piece ... I was completely awe-struck. All of the hair on the back of my neck stood up!! I haven't felt that way about a Star Wars collectible since I was a child. I have found a new passion for SW collecting in these amazing Attakus pieces and I have since spent a lot of time collecting, researching and discussing them. To be honest, you really can not appreciate them unless you see one in person. For one, these are large statues. My Vader 1 is 18" tall! Pictures certainly just do not do them justice. I cannot praise the artisans who created these enough. Some collectors scoff and the price tag, which ranges from approximately $300-600 MSRP but you can easily pick one up from a reputable seller on ebay for less. I believe they are worth every penny as these are original, hand sculpted, hand painted works of ART, not just a "Star Wars collectible" that is mass produced and, as we have all seen with Hasbro, unfortunately, over-produced.
