Locating the right piece of driftwood and plant is half the battle, E-Bay offers you a large selection of both.
Look for driftwood with grooves, ruts, cracks, holes, branchy, forked ,wormy texture and rough surfaces.Cypress driftwoodis a excellent choice, a natural bog wood.
Look for live plants with a good root system. Aquarium live plants Java moss and fern. Orchids,Stag-horn ferns,Bromeliad and Tillandsias attach very well to driftwood.
For Aquarium make sure your driftwood sinks, boil to kill any bugs and drive out air trapped in. Now that you have your driftwood, it is time to think how to plant your garden.Plants make driftwood look very natural and your fish love them.Set the plant on your driftwood and spread out the roots and attach rubber band around driftwood and roots.New roots will attach themselves to the driftwood. Other ways of attaching are fishing line, garbage ties, dental floss & staples. If your arrangement doesn't look good right away, be patient, it will take several weeks for the plants to reorient themselves to the light and your tank.
Mounting Orchids,Stag-horn,Tillandsias and Bromeliad is a simple process, use rough surface. DRIFTWOOD from salt water must be boil first.Apply a hanger to your driftwood. I drill a hole threw the driftwood to hang on a nail, this works best for me. Put a pad of good quality sphagnum moss on your driftwood mount, then place your plants roots on top of it and cover them with spagnum, this allows the roots to spread first into the sphag, helping it get established. Tie root ball to your driftwood, I use rubber bands, fishing line. Do not use copper wire. Stag-horn ferns should be planted standing up, do not hang them up side down, they will grow down on thier own.Once plants are grown to driftwood remove the tie line.
