"Region free" DVDs imported from Asia are the subject of this guide.
Ebay has a large number of sellers that list DVDs made in Asia. Often, these DVDs are listed at enticingly low Buy It Now prices. NEVER buy these as they are often of inferior quality and often won't play in a US DVD player. This even applies to "officially licensed" product, not just the bootlegs. It doesn't matter how cheap a DVD is, if it won't play, it isn't a good deal. I know, I've bought some without realizing what they were.
They're made for sale in Asia and usually have subtitles in several Asian languages. Due to the economics over there being what they are, they're sold in Hong Kong, etc. at a very low price suitable for the Asian market, which means importing and selling them over here cheaply can still bring a good markup. These DVDs are sometimes not identified as being imports, but there are some other clues: one is the location of the seller being Hong King or similar Asian locale. The other clue is being identified as being "region-free". For some reason that's a common characteristic of Asian DVDs.
You might see a five season set of "The Sopranos" for a Buy It Now price so low you could only buy one legitimate USA DVD season for the same price. But that's still no bargain: If it's made for Asia but imported to the US, chances are it isn't worth wasting your time and money on it. Check these too-good-to-be-true offers out and you'll find they usually are, ESPECIALLY on Ebay.
