ART DECO ERA - A DESIGN PERIOD
~~~~~~~~~~
The Art Deco Period was 1920 through 1935.
This ' design period' experiences 'revivials' from time to time ~ its influences stretch to most all aspects of design from fashion/shoes/accessories/clothing & jewelry, architecture, home furnishings (you name it).
Art Deco designs carried over into most all aspects of life during this period, even in music, art, etc.).
The Art Deco era was a period of style where decorative art, design, & architecture showed a 'modernist' reaction that opposed Art Nouveau.
Art Deco characteristics are symmetrical geometric designs & forms (sleek, long forms & shapes, etc).
The Art Deco style of design transformed ordinary objects into graceful (and many times opulent) works of art. The period was sort of built on the elements of modern art and removed the extrinsic (outer) elements that were seen in the Victorian & Art Nouveau eras.
Art Deco's more notable figures & images included svelte people & animals, tall sleek buildings, long cars, etc. Exotic scenery & scenics abounded during the Art Deco period.
We feel that the best architectural examples of this creative era are (obviously) the 1930's skyscrapers including the Chrysler Building in New York City (it's said that Chrysler hubcaps were part of the idea of the design)...and of course NYC's famed Empire State Building must be noted as an excellent example of Art Deco styling in architecture & building design.
Some characteristics that we see in Art Deco era items are very angular lines, bright color, long sharp lines (& the works of Erte' & DeLempika to name a few), & also some similarities to the Arts & Crafts Era.
 Of importance also, when referring to the 'Art Deco' period, is the fact that of all the famed art deco artists & design-setters of the period, Tamara de Lempicka (some spell it differently) must be mentioned. She was a Polish-born artist from a wealthy family & was schooled in Switzerland. A much sought after portrait artist, she married several times, moved to Paris, then on to the USA (Beverly Hills and NYC), then to Houston in 1962, then on to Mexico.
Erte' was a Russian-born designer - he was a painter who later made it big in fashion & stage design,
& designed for musicals, notably Broadway's musical Stardust. He also did fashion art for Harper's Bazaar for over 20 years. We believe that he died in 1990.
Also of this period was the exquisite glass designed by Rene Lalique (we collect it, too).
There's so much more to be said about this wonderful period back in time, yet this space is much to limited to attempt a long novel ~ thanks for viewing & have fun collecting whatever you love & admire!
