Above is a view of St. Phillip's church on Church St. in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. I live in Columbia, South Carolina , so when I visit my favorite city in the world...I always start my walks or actual treks through the downtown neighborhood of Charleston...right here near this church. Look at the gorgeous ironwork made by a master craftsman . It surrounds the entire church. We'll leave here and I will take you to see a few more sightings of antique hand- forged ironwork in the city.
Here is a side view of St. Phillip's church with the elaborate ironwork.
The common iron boot-scraper outside of many homes here. These were put so men could scrape their boots off , as many roads were unpaved when Charleston was first founded.
This was from a home near the battery also, that was an accent over the porch area.
This gate was a deep black but I took this photo in the mid-day sun, so it appears duller. Very heavy, very sturdy old iron fencing.
A work of art with the decorative old ironwork from a home off the Battery . The iron fencing goes all around the home.
Gorgeous large iron gates that I found when I got lost one afternoon, ( never a problem as I always discover something new, and always find my way back eventually ). There is a gaslight in the lantern above the gates...always lit.
Here is some wrought iron that has been painted a green, rare here as it is almost always painted black.
Can you see how beautiful the old wrought iron makes the yards and gardens look ? Many homes have see-through for us passerbys to admire their gardens.
Another heavy , large , impressive iron fencing surrounding a downtown home .
We are only able to put 10 photos in these guides, so I will have to make another with more views or ironwork in Charleston. I hope you are able to go there one day and see all of this for yourself, my photos cannot really do justice to how beautiful they are...all over town.
Thanks very much,
Gina
