I love to explore in downtown Charleston, South Carolina....and since I am in Columbia , SC...I am fortunate to be able to discover all sorts of ' visual treasures " as I make my way for hours around the neighborhoods between the Market and all the way to White Point Park or The Battery . In this short guide I will show you some more hand-wrought decorative ironwork . The above gate leading into a home , creates that courtyard-look that Charlestonians adore.

The famous sword gate off of Legare Street in Charleston.
Many of the homes have iron gates leading into their driveways or sideyards.

Heavy old ironwork gate affording us a view of the back garden.

Here is a double iron gate leading to the driveway with brick paved drive.

Here is a round wrought ironwork inserted into an accent wall , again to give us a view of their beautiful yards.

Another large hand wrought iron gate leading into a Charleston courtyard.

A side view of the famous Rainbow Row of houses near the Battery. There are too many trees with full foliage to take a picture from the front, but look to the top left and you can see a round balustrade balcony that many of the houses have on this street.

Another large , heavy wrought iron gate leading into a back garden.

This was a home that had the wrought iron all around the home , with it's gas lanterns at the front here.

Here is a large double gate leading into a home off the Battery.
I hope you can see how difficult this is to simply walk around the neighborhoods with all of the decorative wrought iron, plants & flowers, paving techniques...and the architecture of the homes is also something that makes people stop and stare. I have a few other short guides with additional pictures of Historic Charleston that you may enjoy.
Check them out and plan on a trip to Charleston some time in your future, you will love it !
Thanks very much,
Gina
