Here is a brief guide to some of the patterns in brick, rocks, slate and cobblestones of downtown historic Charleston, South Carolina . I am a big admirer of Charleston...and since I live close by in Columbia, South Carolina...I get the opportunity to meander the old neighborhoods and delight in all the sights they reveal. The above view is one of a typical brick driveway, very common here...almost no concrete driveways...where the bricks are laid side by side...always off-center from the top bricks.

Here was an example outside of a street close to the Market where they have larger brick outlay and smaller clay brick innerlay.

Of course I cannot show the streets of Charleston without showing the famous cobblestone streets. These were made from stones from the ships ballasts that came here from England , and were used to pave some streets here. A very rough ride, it is said that a  husband would take his pregnant wife down these streets if she was over-due to induce her labor. Ouch !

Here are some bricks laid at a diagonal ( or herringbone pattern ),and then have slate rocks in the inner circle. All of these bricks are clay bricks, not faux-concrete bricks.

Typical side walkway, that has the bricks off-center ,( stretcher bond pattern ), from each other down the center and then straight to border the walk down the sides. Very common here , charming to the hilt.

Here is a view of a side walk ( at the side of the home ), with large slate and brick in between. If you get to Charleston, make sure you walk along the battery with the giant slate paving that ' moves " when you walk in certain spots.  Fun and un-nerving all at once.

I did one area of my back garden with this brick pattern of two bricks side by side, then you switch and turn two more bricks side by side on top...over and over.  Looks great here , also referred to as basketweave pattern.

Here they laid red brick in a circular pattern with short mondo grass  applied  the middle. I saw this often , but also saw some mulch, or pebbles or crushed oyster shells in the middle as well.

This is a very common theme with bricks here in Charleston, they are laid not side by side around beds of flowers...but laid straight up . I am assuming this is to keep weeds from encroaching into the beds as the bricks are further down in to the soil than the more common side by side . This element has been harder for me to personally do in my yard , as you need almost twice as many bricks to accomplish this. I only use old bricks, I hunt them down...I want them to be authentic clay..I want broken beat up areas to show on them...and the newer clay bricks never look like the old ones. Hard to find original old bricks, but check out older neighborhoods in your town or city where they are tearing down old homes...and you may get very lucky. I also tell many people to look out for me if they see any old bricks...to please let me know where they are. I'll bet your neighbors would keep a lookout for you too.

Here is a driveway that has the larger stone bricks and then the clay redbrick surround.

I wish I could put more than 10 pictures in here , ( that is all eBay allows ), as I do have a few more but I will have to write another guide to include them. I hope you are able to visit Charleston, South Carolina for yourself one day. You will love the atmosphere if you love antique, gardens, and historic homes.

Good luck !

Gina
