An ugly schism has somehow formed among chip followers. 'I own one, so it must be great.'
Benchmark tests have become worse than ever. I'd expect to get more of those "it just 'feels' fast" analyses that I occasionally employ myself. Trust me; I see lots of wealthy benchmark programmers.
Don't trust what you read. AMD generally does a more aggressive job of public relations, while Intel does a much more aggressive job with advertising and marketing. On the PR side, the AMD folks are chummier and stay in touch with more media folks across the board. They are far more active than Intel's people. AMD will end up with more ink.
Prepare to patch (driver) your Windows. I had a k6. I had to download driver. I just bought a new Althon FX 64. There is no different. I have a new patch (driver) again Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Blame Microsoft? Probably not.
AMD has not fixed processor caches problem. I just can't believe that a company has problem with processor cache for so long. Basically, a processor has a problem with its cache; AMD will disable the cache and sell it as a cheaper processor.
K6 is just a NexGen.
You stick K6 & Alpha together you get the Althon. Then lobby the media. Result: 'invention of the century', 'processor of the year', 'kick ass processor', 'AMD leap ahead' …etc.
Compare at the same clock speed. AMD processors are still hotter and suck more power than others. The media take 'relative speed' processors and compare with the 'real speed' processors. Then declare 'relative speed' processors run cooler, consume less power. It does not make any sense to me.
More ink, more cover -> result: AMD processors are now more expensive then Intel Processors. I feel I’m fooled.
