Think about it- No lift ticket, No standing waiting in line, no crowds, Any open snow covered field becomes a private ski field! If you live in Kansas you can get 50-60 days of snowboarding- and the really cool thing is once you learn to do it on the snow- its really easy to do on the water! Check out the Video
Some of the most common questions-
Is it easy to learn?
-
Actually Yes- there is so little friction on snow that most people are able to ride behind a 2-4 meter trainer kite the very first day- If you can ski or board a green/blue you can kite- you use the same skis or snowboard you ride at the resort- nothing special or different- Skis are easier to learn on vs a board since you are more bi-directional
Can you steer anywhere- even into the wind?
-
Once you learn to control the kite you can go anywhere you want- uphill, downhill, left right, heelside and toeside and just like sailing you can go upwind by tacking- with todays twin tip snowboards you don't need to learn to jibe, just go switch- Have the kite take you up the mountain- stuff it into your pack and rip down!!
Does it take special equipment?
-
A harness, a kite, control bar and your everyday skis or snowboard, the harness goes around your waist and 'hooks" you into the kite so your arms are simply used to steer the control bar- there are multiple redundant saftey systems to get out of the kite if something goes wrong- Kites come in different sizes starting at 1 meter trainers going all the way up to 20 meters! Bigger kites for less wind- smaller kite for when its really blowing. and everything packs down into a small backpack
What size should I start with?
-
Most people start with a trainer kite to learn the "wind window" and understand how the kite flys (its not like it was when we were kids:) The new ozone DP 2 meter is a great trainer kite cost is $120 and comes complete with the bar- I've never seen a trainer kite with the bar for less than $200 and Ozone is the leading name for snowkites- much like Burton to snowboarding. A good all around size for a snowkite is about 10 meters- thats considered to be a 'bread and butter kite"
Getting dragged around behind a kite sounds OK, But I like to jump, you need hills for that...
