I watch many listings of American Plastic Bricks because I like to search for anything I have not seen before. For example I learned of Halsam's Constructioneer and American Plastic Army Bricks here on eBay!
As I watch I see many sellers who state that they have removed or thrown away the broken bricks in sets they are trying to sell. I have to tell you this makes me cringe! My heart sinks as I learn of more and more bricks which are leaving the realm of usability.
Sellers please don't trash those broken bricks!
Why? Because even though they are broken, they are still very usable!! These bricks are no longer manufactured, so we cannot by new ones to replace the broken ones which are gone.
BLAST DAMAGE More Broken Than Meets The Eye!
These two photos are just a couple of examples of using broken bricks. One view shows what happened when a car crashed into a tree in the front yard and the gas tank blew up. The house suffered blast damage! Blast damage is also useful in war scenes!
The second photo still shows some blast damage which affected the corner, but the rest of the wall almost all the way to the window is built with broken bricks! You cannot see the damange on these because it is simply on the other side.
So what should sellers do with broken bricks?
You have two choices that I can think of right off:
1) You can keep them with the set and sell it as is. Just be sure to state in the listing that there are some broken bricks included. You can even say you are not including them in your price or that they are free! Free stuff is always good. If you use a 3rd party photo hosting service you can even picture them separately for free so folks can see the extent of the damage. As sets move around the world, the broken ones will eventually land with a person who will use them.
2) If you sell a lot of bricks, you can sort the broken ones into a box and save them up for an auction of just broken bricks. I cannot guarrantee I will buy them, but I am not the only one out there who uses them. Additionally, it might be helpful to sort them into broken blocks and broken windows. Sure you might only get a couple bucks in the end for them, but a couple bucks in your hand is always better than not, eh?
So in keeping these bricks circulating around the world, "Brick-Heads" (Thanx for the nick-name Doc!) like me will be sure to have enough to build that buidling just a little bigger!
