A SEASON OF CHANGE

Whether it is a seasonal change of the year or a season of our life there are times when we find our surroundings have become invisible. No, not in the physical sense but in the sense that they have lost their newness. The once thought out items that we searched for endlessly seem to fade into the room. Our awesome decorating ideas have become yawnsome.

Avoid the yawns by designing a room to reflect two different looks built on the same foundation. Take an inventory of your current decorating desires then think in terms of the additional options the room presents. Remember, the time of year and where we are in our lives affects our choices. A room that reflects a warm and cozy appearance can be transitioned into a room that energizes you when taking a proactive approach to your decorating.

While searching for a primary color scheme for our master bedroom, I found myself torn between two very different colors and looks. It was only after I decided that both appealed to me equally (each in their own way) that I began putting together the foundation for a room that could be renewed with minimal effort and cost. Here are a few suggestions to help you achieve a room for all seasons.

To start, choose a wall color that provides a foundation that will work well with both decorating schemes. Set aside the teachings of the past, white walls are not the answer to every room. Experience one of the many stunning color opportunities available today such as a rich Tuscan gold that works well with blues or reds. I started with a wonderful crème and black floral wall covering that works with a variety of colors and still provides interest on it’s own. This color should be dominant in your choice of furniture, window shades and accent rugs.

Once you have chosen your foundation pick two primary colors. I suggest colors that each say something very different to allow you to feel the change in the room. Carefully thought out window treatments can be made to transition with the room. Add a throw in the mix, they are available in beautiful colors, textures and materials. Invest in custom bedding that is reversible. A shower curtain in the color of your foundation can be transformed by changing hooks and adding a swag, tassels or other trim at the top. A collection of decorative pillows and cushions in each of your primary colors or patterns are an inexpensive way to change the look of a room. Ottomans can be made with removable covers and built in storage for “out of season” items.

Finally, you’ll want to add art work,  floral arrangements, and other accent pieces that incorporates all your colors. Collect primary pieces that change with your room, try one of the trendy animal prints currently available. Keep items that are close to the heart from becoming invisible by changing how you display them. Invest in a vase or hand crafted item that reaches out to you ….something that makes you smile each time you enter the room.

Now you’re ready to decide which look you want to try first. Go ahead, enjoy the fruits of your labor and don’t worry about getting bored with it, it’s only here for a season!
