For the average do-it-yourself guitar builder finishing a guitar offer 3 big challenges.
-
Dust control
-
Fume control
-
Overspray control
Here is my solution. You will need:
-
Appliance box
-
36" flourescent light
-
4.5" 100 CFM Axial flow fan
-
Filter Media
-
Hot glue gun
An appliance box makes a good spray booth. If you have limited work space you can build this quickly. When you complete your project simply remove the light and fan and toss the box out. I found this box outside of an appliance store. It's somewhat bigger than is needed but it works. An apartment size refrigirator box would be ideal or even an oven or dishwasher box might work as well. Appliance boxes usually have a top and bottom cap that are steel banded. The delivery guys will cut the band on the bottom cap and lift the top off and remove the appliance. Be sure and get the bottom cap if you can. Reattach the cap using hot glue to stiffen up the box. This box was cut down to 44" which I determined to be a good working height. The door is cut 6" x 32". If you plan to spray a body you can cut the door wider.
I mounted a 3' flourescent shop light fixture just inside the door. It is attached to the wooden blocks you see glued to the outside of the box. Availabele at Lowe's for just under $13.
Inside view of the hanger assembly. The hole is 4" x 4". The assembly is 6" x 6". If you need to turn the item you can rotate it from the outside.
I mounted a 100 CFM axial flow (muffin) fan to the other side. The fan was purchased on new on Ebay for less than $15 with shipping from from "ismalex". Good seller. Simply cut a hole in the cardboard and attach with 2" machines screws and fender washers. On the other side I cut an air intake in the opposite side from the fan. I taped a 4 x 12" filter to the outside. Tape a piece of filter media to the intake side of the exhaust fan. You can buy these 4 x 12" vent filters for $3.87/dozen at Lowe's.
The unit can be set up in a driveway, patio or even an apartment balcony and will contain the fumes and overspray and keep dust out.
