I am prompted to write this guide to help others, as a person who loves to wear and owns many types and styles of rings. I have collected rings in Bakelite, Resin, Lucite, other Plastics, as well as Fine Jewelry in Platinum, Gold and Sterling Silver over the years since I started as a teenager.
I am writing this guide here for you to refer to when buying or selling a wide band ring, or any ring that is thick all around including the shank. I had a problem awhile back while selling some wide band bakelite rings, with a buyer who bought from me not one but three of my bakelite band rings, which of course, are not sizeable. He was insisting I was wrong about the sizes I stated of my rings, which I was quite sure was completely accurate. He insisted I was off by half sizes which he was busy measuring in tiny millimeters and to an exacting degree that even Einstein would find confusing. Of course before listing them, I sized these rings, as I size ALL my rings, on an old bakelite mandrel ring sizing pole. I allowed the buyer to return the rings even though stated final sale, thinking maybe I was wrong. The buyer sent the rings back, where upon I sized them and I WAS RIGHT IN MY MEASUREMENTS, and my listing was 100% accurate. I then decided to take three pictures of each ring on the pole showing the sizes measured were exactly as I stated to the quarter size and email them to him. This was absolute proof that I was correct and he was wrong. He apologized and admitted I was right, and informed me that he didn't realize I was using a "standard" sizing pole mandrel and not a "wide band" sizing pole. I still use my standard one as I cannot find a wide band mandrel, but now I cover the bases by stating that it is what I use to measure my rings.
The lesson here is to learn from me, my fellow sellers who sell rings, and fellow collectors of rings themselves. DO beware that wide band rings, will fit half a size SMALLER than measured with a standard sizer, if there are indeed different kinds. If you measure a 7 on the regular mandrel pole, with a non-tapering ring that is thick all around, it will fit like a 6.5. ect. Since this experience, I always stated the kind of measurer I am using, and state the wide band rings will possibly fit half a size smaller to avoid any more of these scenarios. Also the finger shape is to be considered. It's hard buying things you can't try on first like a ring, but maybe after reading this, I hope I can point a helpful finger toward you with type of problem in your sales or buying experiences on ebay and anywhere else a ring comes into your life!
I HOPE YOU WILL VOTE THIS GUIDE HELPFUL TO YOU!
