Sesame Street Character Listing in Debut Order and Everything You Need to Know

 

Big Bird is an 8-foot 2-inch tall yellow bird, who lives in a large nest on an abandoned lot which is located in 123 Sesame Street's garbage heap. He was born on March 20 and is six years old. His constant companions are Mr. Snuffleupagus and his teddy bear, Radar. His favorite treat is a birdseed milkshake.

Bert and Ernie, two of the most recognized Muppets, are roommates who share the basement apartment of 123 Sesame Street, and regularly engage in comic routines which showcase their odd-couple personalities. Bert, born on Jul 26, is the more mature and analytical roommate. He loves to collect paper clips and bottle caps and play the tuba. His favorite pet is his pigeon, Bernice. Ernie was born on January 28 and is usually annoying Bert with songs and games especially at Bert's bedtime. Ernie can always be seen with his Rubber Duckie.

 

Cookie Monster, originally named Sid and born on November 2nd, is a voracious blue monster with googly eyes. He fights with his conscience daily during the Letter of the Day, as he tries to control his urges to eat the letters. When not eating cookies, this frenzied but cuddly character, loves to sing about cookies or hang out wit his best friend Ernie while eating cookies. He can also be seen as Alistair Cookie when hosting Monsterpiece Theater.

Oscar the Grouch is a mean green monster, who has a green body and no nose. He loves trash so much that he's rarely seen outside of his can. He lives with his orange pet earthworm, Slimey, and his pet elephant, Fluffy, in a garbage can in the heap. He was born on June 1st and despises all things nice and sweet. He loves collecting junk, standing in line, arguing, rainy days, sinking boats and anchovy milkshakes. His car is named the Sloppy Jalopy and girlfriend, Grungetta.

Grover, the gregarious blue monster born on October 14, is excitable, caring and compulsive. His regular segment, Global Grover, follows the self-described "cute and furry monster" around the world as he explores local cultures and traditions. Grover has had several notable roles over the years, often as a waiter or superhero, Super-Grover. Super Grover's costume consists of a bright pink cape, silver helmet, and a 'G' emblazoned on his chest.

Herry Monster, a large light-blue monster with a purple nose, who does not know his strength, is a sweet and lovable monster, who loves children. His birthday is August 21st and he has a doll named Hercules.

Sherlock Hemlock, a spoof of Sherlock Holmes, is always investigating a mystery. This detective dressed is a deerstalker cap and inverness cape can usually be found carrying his magnifying glass. His faithful companion is a dog named Watson, who often solves the mystery before he does.

Mr. Aloysius Snuffleupagus ia a very large brown woolly elephant-like creature and is known more popularly by his nickname "Snuffy". Initially, Snuffy showed up when no one  but Big Bird was around, leaving the rest of the neighborhood to think he was imaginary. In the mid-1980s, however, Snuffy was revealed to be "real" and incorporated into the regular cast. He was born on August 19 and lives with his family in a cave off Sesame Street. His favorite foods are cabbage and spaghetti with meatballs.

Twiddlebugs are a colorful family of insects that can be found in Ernie's flower box.

Count von Count was born on October 9th and loves to count anything and everything over and over and over. He is 1,832,652 years old and lives in a old cobweb-filled castle. Only similar in resemblance to Count Dracula, he indulges in counting during the Number of the Day segment until the mystery number is revealed by his pipe organ. His best friends are his bat, Creepy, cat, Fatita, and octopus, Octavia. He loves capes, widow's peaks, high collars, the concept of infinity and his girl friends, Countess von Backwards and Countess Dahling von Dahling.

The Yip-Yip martians are interplanetary visitors that materialize and investigate our appliances like typewriters and telephones.

Two-Headed Monster is a comical light purple monster, consisting of two heads on one body. One head with horns facing upward and the other with horns facing downward. They only speak in baby talk and sound out words together. They can be found teaching all kinds of concepts like opposites and feelings.

Elmo was born on February 3rd. This high-pitched, high-spirited little furry red monster loves to laugh and hug. Elmo has his own segment near the end of each episode in which viewers explores topics in Elmo's World. This 3 1/2 year old loves his real pet goldfish, Dorothy, orange monster doll, David, and best friends Grover, Zoe, and Mr. Noodle, his mime sidekick on his Elmo's World segment.

Telly Monster is fuschia monster, who was born on September 29th. Originally named "Television Monster", he is known for his worrying, fidgeting, nervous wreck personality, who is easily prone to manic behavior and paranoia. He loves triangles and his best friend, Baby Bear. He has a real pet hamster named Chuckie Sue. He has been known to pogo stick uncontrollably around Sesame Street. His segment is called Monster on the Spot similar to Kermit's New Flash segment.
