Welcome to Iron Wolf Traders' guide
to using cast iron for outdoor decoration!

Cast iron has long been a favorite material for decorative and architectural accents, however it will weather (rust) if it is not protected. Many people choose cast iron for this very reason -- they like the way that it quickly ages and gets that old, antiqued look. However, if you want your cast iron to retain its original, painted finish, just follow these simple suggestions. First of all, be sure to treat your piece before placing it in the elements (or any other very humid environment). Use a good clear-coat spray, which can be found at any home improvement or hardware store. Be sure to reapply every year, or as needed (the frequency will depend on where you place your decorative piece - i.e. on a porch where it only gets an occasional spritz vs. in the middle of your yard where it gets soaked regularly). If you find spots of rust starting, simply give a light rub with some steel wool before re-applying the clear coat. If the spot is especially bad, try a bit of Naval Jelly with the steel wool. My personal secret that I've found works wonders, is to touch up the cleaned spot with a little bit of matching crayon to protect the raw metal. The wax adds an extra layer of protection, and the color covers up the rubbed spot. In extreme cases, or if you simply want to change the look of your piece, cast iron takes paint very well. Simply remove all rust as directed above and repaint with your choice of spray paint. There are many very interesting finishes available now, such as hammered metal, metallic, etc. Taken care of properly, cast iron will provide years and years of distinctive beauty in your home and garden!
