A Guide to Leisure Suite Larry
Leisure Suit Larry is a video game rapscallion introduced in the 1980s by the game company Sierra On-Line. Created by master programmer Al Lowe, Leisure Suit Larry evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The main character's single goal in life is to seduce beautiful women. The Leisure Suit Larry games follow the titular character's attempts to woo women at beaches, hotels, and casinos. There are, all told, dozens of Leisure Suit Larry editions and knock-offs.
Due to the explicit content of the Sierra computer games, manufacturers included a verification system to weed out adolescents. Unfortunately, the questions did not deter dogged fans, and word soon got out that a simple click of the ALT X key could bypass the verification system.
Larry's initial escapades included a visit to the ocean in Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail, a trip to space in Leisure Suit Larry: Lust in Space, and a lounge adventure, entitled Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (a 1987 original that was later remade with better graphics and different storylines).
Larry's full name, Larry Laffner, and his balding, impudent demeanor served to popularize the character. Due to his bashful, "loveable loser" nature, Larry succeeded in gaining fans across the culture. Larry has been reborn on the modern Internet in various incarnations as a blogger, a commentator, and a product spokesman. He has also been referenced or alluded to in various movies and TV shows, such as The Simpsons.
