A Guide to Earnest Sewn and Fashion
Named for the sentiment "product sewn in earnest," Earnest Sewn jeans take core American traditions and blend them with Japanese style and aesthetic. The label was founded by Scott Morrison who turned to fashion design after a successful golfing career on the college circuit. His first company, Paper Denim & Cloth, eventually evolved into Earnest Sewn and Earnest Cut & Sew in 2004.
Earnest Sewn jeans are the first denim products to incorporate the Japanese aesthetic system of Wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is the belief that perfection can be found within the imperfect. Scott Morrison has infused this idea into Earnest Sewn jeans by making imperfections and irregularities an intentional part of every pair of jeans. From thread variations, to construction, to unmatched needle work, flaws become decorations on Earnest Sewn apparel.
Every pair of Earnest Sewn jeans contains a hand stamped signature. Each pair of jeans is sewn and hand abraised by one person and then hand washed and laundered by two others. Each of these artists signs his name on to every pair of jeans he works on, showing Earnest Sewn's pride in handmade American clothing. Apart from traditional jeans, denim skirts, jackets and a children's line are now in production.
No two pair of Earnest Sewn jeans are the same. Earnest Sewn does use a set of basic template, however: Super Low Slim Taper, Classic Fit, Classic Taper, Super Low Button Boot Cut, Full Leg Boot Cut, Standard Boot Cut and Straight Leg Cut. Each template is then used as a blank canvas for the designers to play with, creating truly one-of-a-kind jeans.
