After selling many sets of Stainless Steel Rocker Panels for all models of vehicles, we noticed that no manufacturer really informs the customers as of the best and easiest way to install these items. Here is a simple method of how this is done. Installing rocker panels can be done very easily within usually about 30 to 45 minutes.
The tools you will need: Painters or masking tape, a water based marker, some clean shop towels, a piece of string about as long as the vehicle, a bottle of isopropyl alcohol.
Step #1- Unpack your rocker panels and set them in order as they are to be installed. Most manufacturers will mark the panels as P1, P2, ect for the passenger side and D1, D2, ect for the drivers side. The 1 panel would be at the front of the vehicle, 2 behind that and so on. Check the panels for any visible damage. You can very easily see it they have any creases or dents. DO NOT PEAL OFF THE PROTECTIVE COATING YET.
Step #2- Clean the lower area of the vehicle. This step is very important. Use some isopropyl alcohol to wipe this area clean. The alcohol will remove wax and other debris that may keep the panels from sticking. Let the alcohol dry and continue.
Step #3- Using the masking tape, set the larger panels in place and tape them temporarily to the vehicle. Usually this is the door panels. Do not peal the adhesive backing yet. You are just going to fit an align the panels. The panels will usually either line up with the lower body line or the bottom of the door.
Step #4- Continue taping on all of the panels, aligning each one as you go. For the very back pieces use a piece of string and a friend to set them level with the others. Stretch the string across the top of the door panels and pull it tight back behind the rear fender. This is an easy way to get a straight line across the rear fender.
Step #5- Once all of your panels are in place use the water based marker and place small marks at the edges, top and bottom, of each panel. Make sure you are using a water based marker here so at the end of the install all of the marks will come of with plain water and it will not damage your paint.
Step #6- Starting with the door panels, remove the masking tape, gently remove the adhesive backing material. Start at the top and align the panel with the marks that you made in step #5. Work the panel slowly from the top down. After the panel is in place, using your clean shop towel, rub the panel to heat up the adhesive a little and to set the entire panel in place.
Step #7- Repeat step #6 on all of the other panels.
Step #8- Gently remove the protective coating on the panels. This is easily completed if your work from one corner and pull diagonally across each panel.
Step #9- Wipe your new panels down with some glass cleaner and you are done. You will also be cleaning off the water based marker marks in this step.
This sounds like a long process but it really is quick and easy.
We hope this helps.
