A few pointers to look for when buying one.
Glass Inserts- Original Ruby red Clarks chests are being copied or restored using flashed glass that has been sandblasted to create the letters. This is an easy repair, but not correct. An original ruby glass insert will be clear in the letter, with foil behind it to accent the letter. The red glass was fused to the clear glass, and will be slightly higher than the clear.If the letter is not clear, it is a fake......or more kindly, a poor restoration.
Knobs-There were many styles of knobs, and just as many copies, and substitutes.....so be careful
Decals- Not many chests will have survived with the original decals, or tins intact, and there are severall good replacement decals available.
