A Catalogue of Nepalese Postmarks, 1879 - 1935 by Wolfgang Hellrigl
This catalogue has been designed as a companion to "The Native Postmarks of Nepal", published in 1978. Since the different types of Nepalese postal markings have all been thoroughly discussed in this handbook, there was no need now to repeat neither the general background information nor the description of individual postmarks.

In fact, the general principles outlined in the abovementioned handbook are still very much valid today, even though the past five years have brought numerous discoveries of new types, particularly of the classic period.

All of these new finds – including 125 new drawings of postmarks as well as a number of corrections and countless extensions of the periods of use - have been incorporated into the present catalogue, bringing it right up to the latest standards of research in this field.
Further improvements include two new maps of post offices and postal routes, a complete list of 19th century P.O.'s, the actualize scale of the 400 drawings, etc.

The most important innovation, however, lies in the valuation of the different types of postal markings, made possible by a continuous collection of relevant data and the additional evaluation of very large numbers of native covers. The points system was adopted in an attempt to convert a mass of empiric values into a useful, permanent rating scale. From this rating system, the law of supply and demand will then automatically establish a set of corresponding monetary values that will be subject to periodic variations.

Similar systems have been successfully used in other philatelic areas and should thus give good results in the field of Nepalese postmarks, too.
Space limitations were the main reason why this catalogue ends with the year 1935, i.e. just before the big floods of new series of postal markings set in.
