The ThinkPad x300 is the cover story (and actually on the front cover of the February 25th 2008 issue of Business Week.  The x300 draws high praise and acclaim in the BW cover story  "Perfect: The Quest to Design the Ultimate Laptop." So in part, the X300 basks in the glow of the high critical acclaim of this publicity.

A quotation from the article helps set the tone:

The X300 was designed with the goal of creating the "Uber Laptop":

"a new high-end laptop that would include three important emerging technologies. The first was solid-state storage, which doesn't break when people drop their laptops the way the mechanical disk drives in most computers sometimes do. The second technology was LED backlighting on computer displays, which would improve movie viewing. The third was a DVD drive just seven millimeters thick (BW, 02.25.2008)"

The x300 is latest and newest in the Thinkpad line and critics regard it as an incredible feat of engineering that will elevate the status of Lenovo's entire line of ThinkPad.  The X300 is Lenovo's crown jewel.

But from a technology perspective the x300 features unsurpassed technology that is greater than the some of its parts.

The x300 replaces the hard drive with solid state 64GB storage.  Solid state storage is much faster, lighter weight and much more robust storage.

The x300 includes a DVD/RW in a laptop so thin that fits into an interoffice mail envelope.

That said, I personally use the Thinkpad X60 2AUAU Tablet and the Tablet PCs are my personal favorite (the X300 is not a tablet pc).

The solid state drive alone adds about $1000.00 to the price a laptop. And the x300 packs a lot more technology than just the solid state drive.

The x300 is a premium priced laptop with great engineering and technology.  For those who need/can afford what it offers it's a uniquely and exquisitely engineered machine.
