INTRO:
If you're already into or just entering the fabulous world of knife collecting, at times it can be an overwhelming experience. There are hundreds of knife designers and literally thousands of designs out there with new models springing up almost on a daily basis. With this sudden boom in the knife collector's arena, many consider knife buying to be like walking through a minefield. That being said, trust me, the further you walk the easier the task becomes.
WHY KNIFE COLLECTING:
Why do people collect anything? Because it's fun! but be careful it can become addictive (in a good way of course). Knives in one form or another have been around since the beginning of mankind, so it's only fitting that people find a natural interest in collecting and preserving an important piece of our heritage. Knife collectors come from all walks of life, everyone from the local newspaper carrier to CEO's of Fortune 500 companies, it's a bond that stretches around the globe.
HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT TO COLLECT:
That's a difficult one because everyone has different tastes and reasons for collecting. Some people collect classic folders because their Dad's and Granddad's always had a collection of pocket knives, and in many cases passed them on as a keepsake, thus creating another generation of collectors. Hunters and fisherman tend to really like nice Utility / Bowie style knives. Law Enforcement, Fireman, and Military find it really hard to resist some of the high tech, high grade steel tactical folders on the market now. Then there's always the general collector that has a bit of everything (fixed blade, tacticals, commemoratives, etc.). Buying new knives with potential for future profit is the best way to start, but as you become more seasoned you'll find it very interesting and fun delving into the world of older second hand knives. Overall, there are no set rules for knife collecting other than a passion for what you're doing. Now there is a twist to this, if you're collecting for investment purposes the main rule here is, know your market.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY:
As with any investment, never pay more than you can afford to lose. While the collectable knife market has for the most part shown a steady increase in value over the years, not every knife that you purchase is going to show profit. The common sense approach would be, if you go out and purchase four mass produced, made in China copies of a well known design for $25.00 each, ten years from now those same knives are most likely going to be worth $25.00 each (if you're lucky). Now you take that same $100.00 and purchase a well known limited edition, American, German, or Japanese made design and keep it ten years, it's a pretty safe bet that the value of that knife could possibly double or even triple. You can find excellent quality knives that will continue to rise in value ranging anywhere in price from about $50.00 to several hundred, but buyer beware; there are a lot of crooks out there that will sell you a fake. If a seller won't accept returns, BEWARE! If a seller only accepts cash type payments, BEWARE! Rule of thumb, "if it walks and quacks like a duck, it's normally a duck"....
