I'm constantly being asked what type of eBay business I believe is the best way to go when funds are tight.
Well, I'll give you my honest thoughts.
If I were to start my eBay business all over again, I reckon I'd go with being an eBay consignor.
And here's why.
Even if you have zero money to invest in stock, it doesn't matter as long as you know how eBay works and what sells on eBay.
You can practically start today and have a business up and running by tomorrow once you know what you're doing.
There are literally so many opportunities for you to sell other peoples stuff on eBay, that in this lifetime you couldn't take advantage of them all!
With so many people (including business people) wanting to sell items or overstock on eBay, but don't know what to do, or don't want to know how to do it, once you get the word out that you're a confident eBay seller, the deals will come to you so fast you won't know what hit you!
Here are 9 Simple Steps to running an eBay consignment business successfully.
1. Have a contract so that both you and the person supplying the stock for you to sell know exactly what the steps are. The contract will include things like.... the items you'll be selling, the fees you'll charge etc.
2. You must take possession of the items you'll be selling. This ensures you will have no problems once the sale has been made. If you get questions during the listing duration, you'll be able to answer them as you have the stock on hand.
3. Promote your business. You can do this easily by creating simple flyers, running line adds in your local paper, speaking to friends and family, speaking to local businesses or via the many contacts you have in your community. The ideas are endless when you get your thinking cap on!
4. Have somewhere safe to store the items you're selling. This is common sense. You are responsible for the items until they are sold and sent. Make sure you store them in a safe place and I'd also advise you to take out insurance. A very simple procedure.
5. Think about selling into a 'niche' category. In other words, you may specialise in a particular area and only sell items in that area. It's always easier to sell items that you're very familiar with as you can let buyers know that you're the expert in that particular field. For example, you may know a lot about 'Antiques.' You could direct your marketing towards antique shops and private owners of antiques and offer your services to these people only.
6. Quote your minimum price. In other words, don't be sucked in to selling peoples junk on eBay. Buyers are not stupid, so take this business seriously. If I was taking on a consignment contract, I'd only want to accept items that have a value of at least $50. It's up to you of course, but remembers, time is money!
7. Do your homework and know how much you'll likely make on eBay. Let your partner know how much the items they want you to sell are selling for on eBay at that time. At the end of the day, the market will let you know what they're willing to pay for certain items.
8. Your feedback is your reputation! Protect it with all your might! Be honest, courteous and do everything in your power to make shopping with you as pleasant as possible for the buyer.
9. Most importantly....enjoy what you do and have fun. For me, this is the most important aspect of my eBay business. I simply can't wait to jump out of bed every morning and start my day. I love what I do and cannot see myself ever doing anything else because of the lifestyle I know have.
I believe running a consignment business is by far one of the easiest ways to have a profitable eBay business with a never ending supply of stock to sell.
