Our small business clients hire us to be staff they can't afford, and we and they need tools that make their PCs,

That's lead us over the years to think highly of a tool called Norton System Doctor that comes with Norton SystemWorks.   This software is actually a bundle of various tools including Norton System Doctor and inside System Doctor, various disk, memory, update, fragmentation and other performance monitors.  Some of the other tools include Live Update, Norton AntiVirus, Speed Disk, and more.  We believe that with the 2006 (Now thru 2009) version's addition of AntiSpyware checking and removal that getting all this for typically under $30 via eBay is a great value.  We've updated many of our clients, while observing our 'one-year-old' policy to get outstanding prices with great and proven functionality.

We have even composed a standard settings file for Norton Windows Doctor that we use with all our new installations to make all these tools even easier to monitor and use.  Send us an inquiry if you're interested in a copy of that settings file with some simple instructions for using it?

BONUS NOTE:  We recently learned that Symantec is allowing users with valid subscriptions for SystemWorks 2006 thru 2008 to upgrade to SystemWorks 2008 or 2009 and retain the remainder of their current subscription.  It's an offer that was good enough to have us buying new copies of SystemWorks 2006 just to use the product key for a SystemWorks 2008 installation.   Here are the details as we received them from a Symantec support technician::

Follow these instructions to complete the download, installation and activation process.

1. Once you click on the link above, please select the "Save" on the file download window.
2. Select desktop as the location to save the file.
3. Once the download is complete double click on the NSWS081100.exe icon on your desktop. This will commence the installation.
4. Once the installation is complete, you will be required to activate the product.

At this point our experience is that the product can be activated with any recent SystemWorks product key.  We've been using 2007, 2008 and 2009 keys to update 2008 software with NO problems.

PS     The AntiSpyware checking is not as strong as we'd prefer in any one tool, and certainly not in SystemWorks 2006 (It's better in 2008).  We routinely install a second Spyware checker (e.g. Lavasoft's Ad Aware) and occasionally a third.
