The King of the Road - MarX Toys Style
Marx largest toy steam locomotive the die-cast metal 333. Produced 1949-1958. It has the only 4-6-2 wheel arrangement produced by the Marx Toy Company. Flat to satin black in color with green marker lights, wire hand rails and spoked drivers. This was Marx's top of the line steam locomotive.
There are two models: the early model, 1949-54, is non-smoking and has no shade or awning over the cab side window. The later model has a smoke unit and the shade. Both are nice heavy toys approximately 4 lbs. and highly detailed and very collectable. Both models are electric and have reversing units. These models used a linked two piece outer long drive rod and one piece inner siderod link.
The 333 usually was supported by a heavy cast NYC tender. Equally as nice and detailed. Of course both of these were intended as toys and some deviation from authentic locomotives was to be expected in wheel and valving arrangement.
The 333 also has a plastic Sister Locomotive the 1829. This model is the same basic size and shape as the 333. All models carry the shaded window, but has a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement. Available in smoking or non-smoking. This engine was usually supported by a Santa Fe tender. A large 2731 tender in plastic was especially made to go with this model, somewhat similar in size to the diecast model.
