In case you haven't noticed we are in the midst of a depression, a small one but a depression none the less. Among the corporations responsible for the current economic situation is Ebay Inc., and its several subsidiary companies; but I will get to them later in this missive.
As a genuine Antique Dealer I will only address the ills in the area of my expertice and the paypal situation, then both companies squeezing small sellers out of business on ebay.
1) For the past decade or more Ebay has allowed the Antiques area to be flooded with cheap reproductions and fakes made in Eastern Europe in the begining, and then made in the U.S. in the original molds. Ebay is at fault for not policing & enforcing its policies, why? Because the primary perpetraters were Powersellers.
2) When ebay did try enforcing policy in the late 1990's it favored only the powersellers, and disadvantaged the smaller sellers, thus squeezing out the amatures, about 15%.
3) When this policy was overturned for the current feedback policy the powersellers were again advantaged over the smaller sellers, and another 20% left ebay.
4) With the current PayPal restrictions, small sellers are all but aqueezed out all together, and from the dealers I have emailed, phoned, written to, talked to personally who are leaving ebay now as a result.....about another 25% of small sellers.
5) I have quit on the 30th of last month. It is no longer worth it. the fakes have devalued the original Antiques which may never recover thier actual values again thanks to eBay.....it is a shame that they have never been regulated, but ebays lobby is too strong. This is the best that I can do to inform people, but I bet ebay pulls this off before too many people are able to see it and read it!
It was fun in the begining.....C-Ya Folks!
