Our recommendations above are based on the relative ease of reconfiguring the vehicle to the STOCK condition should the vehicle ever need to go back to a Ford dealership for service, and EGT's we have seen when towing up to 22,000 pounds. Putting the truck back to completely stock is about a 30 minute job with this setup and EGT's have never exceeded 1100 degrees with our heaviest trailer up a grade in the hot California desert!
Of course there are other options if you want to go “Hog Wild” with Turbos, Injectors, Pumps, EGR Deletes, Transmission Upgrades, etc., etc. but that stuff is pretty much for our race customers and gets expensive in a hurry.
NOTE: All 6.4L DPF-DELETE and Catalytic Converter Delete tuning products are STRICTLY FOR OFF-ROAD USE ONLY!!! According to the EPA Clean Air Act, they are illegal for use on any Federal, State, or Local public highways and illegal use is punishable by the penalties enacted by the mentioned laws. We do not condone illegal use of these products, and an Environmental and Liability waiver must be signed in order to activate any DPF-Delete products after purchase.
REAL WORLD DRIVING TEST(s):
Because of the high volume of requests, We have performed some testing on one of our customer's 2008 FORD 6.4L Trucks - Here are the details:TRUCK: 2008 Ford F250 6.4L Diesel 4x4 Crew Cab Short Bed
ODOMETER: 5,200 miles at start of testing
FUEL: 76 brand Ultra Low Sulfur #2 Diesel
TEST MILES: 200 miles per test
TEST TEMP: Approximately 50 degrees on average
TEST SPEED: 65 MPH (using cruise control)
ELEVATION: Sea Level to approximately 4000 feet
PRODUCTS: Banks "Ram-AIr" Intake (#C), +250 HP tune, Banks Single Exhaust (#E), DPF / CAT Delete Kit (#2)
PROCEDURE: We selected a 100 mile stretch of road that goes from the Union 76 station right by our shop, out an almost completely flat section at sea level for about 40 miles, through some foothills, up a mountain pass to an elevation of about 4000 ft, then almost flat again across the high desert for another 40 miles. We filled up the truck, drove out 100 miles and then turned around, came back, filled up again and calculated the MPG for each of the respective tests. We calculated the ACTUAL MPG from the miles shown on a Garmin GPS and the Gallons of Diesel used. We filled the truck ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP of the filler neck so we didn't risk any error in the shut-off mechanism of the pump screwing up our tests. All tests were at approximately 2AM so there was NO TRAFFIC and we performed all tests with the cruise control set at 65 MPH for the entire test except for the short period of entering the highway, exiting the highway, and turning around.
RESULTS:
TEST 1 - Totally stock Ford F250 Crew Cab 4x4 6.4L Diesel - 13.2 MPG
TEST 2 - Installed Banks Intake - 14.0 MPG
TEST 3 - Installed Banks Exhaust - 14.0 MPG
TEST 4 - Installed our DPF and Cat Elimination kit with the 250 HP tune - 19.1 MPG
CONCLUSION: The results say it all... 5.9 MPG INCREASE!!! I hope this answers everyone's questions! Although we appreciate your inquiries, PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE THOROUGHLY!!! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's):
Q: “Can I run Mexican Diesel after I install this kit?”A: Yes. Virtually any diesel fuel that could run in pre-DPF Trucks (2007 and earlier), will run after you install one of our kits.
Q: “Can I run Bio Diesel or Vegetable oil mix after I install one of these kits?”
A: Again, Yes. Virtually any diesel fuel that could run in pre-DPF Trucks (2007 and earlier), will run after you install one of our kits.
Q: “What about diesel from foreign countries that are overseas?”
A: Some foreign countries, Honduras for example, have NASTY “High Sulfur” Diesel which, in addition to messing with your CAT and DPF, will cause problems with your EGR Valve which we can help you work around as well if you need to.
Q: “Is this easy to install?”
A: That depends on your skill level and which kit you select. The most simple kit, Kit #1 below, takes the average home mechanic about 60 minutes to install and takes experienced installers about 30 minutes to install. The more involved the kit you select is, the more time it takes to install. Our most complete kit takes about 4 hours to install for the average home mechanic.
Q: “How is the sound going to be on the road?”
A: The volume of exhaust depends on the muffler that you choose. We prefer one of the Banks kits which will help the truck remain relatively quiet; the exhaust should not be audible when the windows are up and should be VERY mild when the windows are down. For comparison, with the Banks muffler and our DPF delete kit, typically the turbo is louder than the exhaust when the windows are down.
Q: “I have a Banks dual exhaust kit, will this still fit?”
A: Yes, this is actually the preferred kit when you do not purchase one of our complete exhausts! Any DPF Back tailpipe setup should fit exactly as it did with the DPF installed once you properly install our kit.
Q: “How much work is the programmer to install and is this fly by wire?”
A: The programmer is very easy to install. It plugs into the ALDL port under your dash. “Fly by wire”, or Drive By Wire as it is called in cars and trucks, refers to the connection between the controls and the mechanical components; it most commonly refers to the gas pedal to the throttle control of the engine. There may be some companies out there using this term to refer to their programmer however it is NOT RELATED to the programmer of the truck so they are using it incorrectly. The correct term would be WIRELESS however this touch screen is NOT Wireless; using a wireless programmer interface requires mounting a control box out of sight and interfacing it with the Stock PCM then using a Wireless control module. We use a wired system that is simple to remove, if the need ever arises, and is not affected by the possible communication problems that wireless devices suffer from.
Q: “Any drilling necessary?”
A: Drilling is NOT required for the standard installation.
Q: “With normal driving how much MPG do I save?"
A: Every driver has a different opinion of what “NORMAL” driving is, everyone has different driving styles and drives under different conditions; for that reason it is not possible to predict exactly what improvement each customer will obtain. Our average customer sees between 3 and 7 MPG increase depending on driving styles and conditions.
Q: “I understand that this kit is illegal; if I do get caught on state or federal streets or highways what is the fine?”
A: The fine is determined by the state you are in. There is also a Federal fine which I have heard can be as high as several thousand dollars. I have not heard of anyone actually being fined but before you do have to sign a waiver that promises us you will only use your truck off-road!
Q: “I understand that this kit will void my factory warranty if Ford finds out that I used it; Why do they do that?”
A: Manufacturers are required by law to PROVE that an aftermarket product caused a problem or failure on your vehicle before they can void a warranty or disallow any warranty claims however, IF THE AFTERMARKET PRODUCT ALTERS EMISSIONS or EMISSION SYSTEM COMPONENTS or otherwise makes the vehicle illegal (on the Federal or State level) then all bets are off and they can void your warranty in the blink of an eye. That being said, after all the warranty problems with the P.O.S. 6.0L’s out there, you can bet they are chomping at the bit to void any warranty whenever they can so... the bottom line is that you have to decide if the MPG savings and power gain are worth the risk of potentially having your warranty voided IF YOU GET CAUGHT with the system on your truck.
Q: “Do you do installations or only sell the kit?”
A: Yes, we will install the kit but the customer must TRAILER their truck out of our shop if we do! For legal reasons we cannot allow a truck with this kit to drive away from our shop on public roads; you must trailer it out of here. For that reason, and the fact that the kit is very easy to install, almost all of our customers choose to install the kits themselves.
