Hello all,i'm writing this guide on the 2007 Goerge Washington dollar error's,just to share my small amount of knowledge on the subject in hopes of helping all buyers!
I'm not sure what year it was that congress passed a bill that "NO" imperfect coin shall be produced by the U.S.Mint and released to the public !!But there is such a law,and when i find it i'll update this. This is the reason why the U.S.Mint has such stringent guidelines for production, inspection, and release of coins to the u.s.population.
Lets start with the mintage numbers, there were an estimated "3,000,000" Goerge Washington dollars minted.Thats quite a few dollars. They were fed into the incuse machine face up or face down at random, and the "upside down"errors are "NOT" errors at all.But simply a type 1,and a type 2 coin as stated by the Mint !
Now out of those "3,000,000" minted it has been estimated by the u.s. mint that around "70,000"to "100,000" or so (maybe more-maybe less) were produced without the incused mint mark, date, and in god we trust(no edge lettering) on the rim's and escaped without detection from the mint, most were sent to Jacksonville Fla..This "IS" the "BIGGEST" mint error in the "HISTORY" of the U.S.Mint, and should never have happened under the mints strict guidelines ! It has "SURPASSED" the three legged buffalo nickle error's(there were approx.800,000 3 legged buffalo errors from the 1937d mint alone)out of aprox..100,000,000 Buffalo nickles minted in 1937 . This is the reason "WHY" this error is so important,"NOT" only because of how few there are.But because of how "BIG" the U.S.Mints "BLUNDER" was !The U.S.Mint shut down after this error appeared, to re-vamp it's "QUALITY CONTROL" measures to try to insure this would "NEVER" happen again !And it was a "MAJOR" embarrasment to the U.S.Mint.
Now out of those 70,000 to 100,000 or so missing incuse errors(or missing edge lettering),it is estimated by the U.S.Mint that "ONLY" around 1,000 to 2,000 have the struck thru grease error(or starburst error)on them.these are legitimate error's and are highly sought after because there are "VERY FEW"of these double error coins !At first, only ICG,and ANACS recognized these "DOUBLE ERROR'S",and labled them as such !Now PCGS has begun to recognize this double error also, and "HAS" began re-gradeing theses coins to reflect the double error on their lables.NGC refuse's to recognize the struck thru grease error ,stating that it was caused by an over used die,or stressed die. Regardless as to what caused it,it still deface's the coin, and make's it a double error coin !
CAUTION:The U.S.Government has issued a "WARNING" statement to consumer's to "NOT" buy any error coin's that have "NOT" been slabbed and graded buy a reputable company ! Due to people forging error's and selling them as authentic. The top four, third party gradeing company's are as follow's,and in their ranking order ! PCGS,ICG,NGC,ANACS..(i'm sorry to say that NGC will probably fall soon to number 4 in the ranks, due to this misgradeing of a double error coin, you have to question their accuracy) I have personally talked to NGC on the phone twice, and they refuse to budge on this issue !
It is my opinion ,due to the knowledge i have aquired on this issue ,on these error and double error coins , that the price of these G.W. $1.00 error's will skyrocket in price in very little time !
All of the above is my"OPINION" based on information i have aquired through my investigation's into these error's ! I've called every one of these company's and checked their policies , including the A.N.A. ,and the U.S.Mint ! But don't just take my word for it , call them all and check it out for yourself !Thanks for reading and i hope it's been helpful !!
