As part of its First Spouse Gold coin series, on August 30, 2007 the U.S. Mint released the Jefferson Liberty $10 Gold Coin. This coin was released in both a proof and uncirculated version; both bear the W mint mark of the U.S. Mint at West Point.
Each $10 coin consists of one-half ounce of 24 karat gold. The obverse of the Jefferson Liberty depicts the Draped Bust Half-Cent obverse minted in the early 1800’s. The reverse, designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers, features President Jefferson’s grave marker at Monticello with the epitaph he requested to reflect his most significant accomplishments.
The coin sold out at the mint within about two and half hours of being released and is limited to a mintage of 20,000 for the proof design, and 20,000 for the uncirculated design.
