Hi. Copper is my thing. I've spent a lot of time researching, studying and collecting 1 cent coins and the series from 2000 to date certainly has enough legit varieties to raise more than it's share of questions.
The one date that has caused lots of confusion and discussion is the 2006P 1cent coin. Huge......disgustingly huge..... sums of money are paid for these "rare" rolls whenever they appear on eBay. Quite frankly, I find it disturbing and here's why.
The REAL fact of the matter about these rolls is they were simply over runs from the production of the Uncirculated (prooflike) sets. Some 80,000 coins left over from the run were rolled and released into circulation and nothing more. That means there was 1600 rolls of these things released and what you're really buying is a prooflike or Numismatic BU coin.
Of course in this day and age anyone can write anything and be an expert. So how did I come to learn this? Easy. All you have to know is someone who works at the mint who happened to know what exactly went on with these things.
I'll leave it up to you to decide for yourself what you think these rolls really are. I think they are NBU's or prooflikes, and that's all they'll ever be. Those who have a vested interest in perpetuating the myth about these rolls probably won't be pleased to read this article, but I can't help that. Knowledge is something that needs to be shared in this hobby.
