The 2000-01 SPx NBA set was released in the fall of 2000. While the 1998-99 SPx Finite Spectrum set featured rookies limited to only 25 copies each, the 2000-01 SPx set produced a "Spectrum" parallel card, limited to only 25 of ALL players in the set, including cards #1-90, the base set. These cards were seeded at an average rate of 1 per case, with several of the rookie-jersey Spectrum cards being exchange cards redeemable through Upper Deck's mail-in program. The 138 card set did not include #137 Pete Mickael, as he never signed an NBA contract and was not included in the set.
Based on the then sky-high popularity of the 1998-99 SPx Spectrum #/25 rookie set, collectors flocked to the 2000-01 SPx set's top rookies. At the time, Darius Miles was the king of the hobby, and his BGS 9.5 Spectrum Rookie Auto Jersey sold for $20,000 on eBay. The same card has since sold in 2006 for under $400. Other high-dollar rookies were Stromile Swift and Kenyon Martin, with both drawing high-dollar bids in the $100s. Marcus Fizer, the #4 pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, has seen the value of his rookie auto jersey take a dramatic hit, selling in the summer of 2006 for under $25 after once demanding over $200.
The base set features a gold-foil embossed stamping along the left side of the vertically designed card. Once selling on average for $20 - $80, oversaturation and disinterest in a six year old set have caused the sell prices of these rare cards to reach single digits in dollars. Starts such as Kobe and Shaq still bring respectable amounts at auction.
Rookies Spectrums from the set, again, limited to only 25 copies ever produced, such as Dalibor Bagaric, Ruben Wolkyweski, Lavor Postell and other second-round draft picks from this set once brought $30+ at auction, and have since gone unsold at $2. Michael Redd, commonly believed to be the steal of the draft, and perhaps its best pro, has seen his Spectrum sell ungraded at over $100 and hold much of its value.
The 2000 NBA Draft class was one of the least productive of the last 20 years, with numerous busts included in this set. Besides Fizer, lottery picks were also spent on players who currently hold little hobby-interest such as: Chris Mihm, Keyon Dooling, Mateen Cleaves (14th), Joel Pryzbilla, and DerMarr Johnson,
Other rookie of note in this set, which features a total of 47 first-year pro cards include: Rookie of the Year Mike Miller, current Orlando Magic forward Hidayet Turkoglu, former Sooner Desmond Mason, Toronto Raptor Morris Peterson, former NBA All-Star Jamaal Magloire, NY Knick Jamal Crawford (exchange card), and Quentin Richardson.
1st round picks no longer in the NBA include: Jeromo Moiso, Courtney Alexander, Jason Collier, Donnel Harvey, and Erick Barkely. All were signed rookie jersey cards.
Of note: the 1999-00 SPx set which came between the 1998-99 and 2000-01 sets featured a radiance parallel numbered to 100 and a 1/1 Spectrum card. Based on little hobby interest for cards with 100 copies, Upper Deck reverted to only 25 parallel cards for the 2000-01 SPx Spectrum set and has continued to do so each year through the 2005-06 SPx release.
