When shopping around for F-body Muscle Cars, we are always looking at the BIG PICTURE.  However, what is lost in our perception is what may lie underneath.  On 1st and 2nd generation Camaros and Firebirds, the rear frame rails are prone to rust or rot in the back section subframe.  As the frame rail runs from the leaf spring perch underneath, it curves under the rear seat floor pans, runs up to the trunk area, where it finally extends to the tail light area and attaches to the rear spring shackle.  The first spot that usually rusts first is where it curves under the rear seat pan, but be sure to check all the areas mentioned.  A common problem is weakness in the floor or trunk where the spring starts to "push" through the sheet metal.  This is an obvious problem and can be spotted easily.  DON'T BE AFRAID TO LOOK DEEP UNDER THE REAR OF THE CAR!!!  But please use equipment designed for lifting the car, and ALWAYS use the safety mechanisms to insure your health, ie jack stands, rack locks, etc...

The pictures shown show rot in the curve under the rear seat.  Notice that the frame has been "doctored" to look solid, but closer inspection shows this not to be the case.  Frame rails can be replaced, but it is very expensive and time consuming.  Often times the repairs outweigh the value of the car.   So to be sure of the frame integrity, you should be able to tap with a hammer or squeeze with a pair of channel locks without any distortion or breakage.  Common sense should be used as well when determining its strength.  DON'T LET YOUR EYES DECEIVE YOU!!!

To sum up, restoring an old car is enjoyable and can give you a great sense of accomplishment.  However, a vehicle is only as good as its weakest link, and rear subframe integrity is a very important factor in cost and safety.  Happy Hunting to all you Camaro/Firebird enthusiasts!!!
