Aftermarket parts and Accessories

There are a few main companies that offer aftermarket parts for your Honda Civic.  A few to check out are:

-          AEM – Advanced Engine Management – they offer a range or parts from air intakes to fuel management.  Mostly engine upgrades.

-          DC Sports – they offer a wide range from short shifter to headers      .

-          Neuspeed – they offer suspension and brake upgrades, as well as engine management software.

-          Mugen Motorsports – they have a wide variety of products

-          Energy Suspension – Suspension bushing and parts

Most of these companies have websites where you can browse their products and even order  from an approved retailer.  There is of course a huge variety of exterior modifications that can be purchased as well but that is for a later guide.

A few things to keep in mind when adding aftermarket parts has to do with smog.  Most states have some sort of smog laws that need to be followed.  If you live in California, it is best to purchase parts that C.A.R.B. rated.  This means that your car in theory will still pass smog when the parts are installed.  Another thing to keep in mind is that your engine needs to work together to create more power and run more efficiently.  It does no good to be getting more air into the engine if you cannot get the exhaust out at the same rate, and you cannot add the fuel needed to utilize the air coming in.  Every part has to work together.  Yes your exhaust may sound really cool to you but you may not notice a gain in horsepower until you change out the header and the intake.  Just something to think about.

Another thing to consider are the brakes on your car.  Most stock brakes are set up to have more braking power in the front of the car, and less in the rear.  Keep in mind that even if you add a ‘big brake’ kit it may not improve your stopping distance.  Adding bigger brakes or a racing brake set up may actually make things worse because racing brakes are designed to be used on a race track with a certain temperature range in mind.  If your brakes never reach that temperature on the street you may not see any improved braking performance.  Make sure the brake kit is designed for street use.

There are a lot of companies the specialize in aftermarket parts for your Honda Civic.  eBay can be a wonderful way to get a hold of aftermarket parts, but there are a few things to remember and consider when purchasing car parts on eBay.  Pay attention to the pricing of the parts.  Does the price seem too high or too low?  Checkout other online retailers and see what a comparable price range for that part would be.  If something seems fishy find another item.  Make sure you know exactly what you are getting and of course pay attention to all the rules and conditions of each auction.   You cannot assume that parts purchased on eBay will come with install instructions either, so make sure you know what you are doing when installing parts, or have a qualified professional install the parts for you.  OH, and just because an auction has JDM in the title doesn’t mean it is a high priced item, or that it is hard to find.  I have seen auctions where people pay way too much for parts and they have JDM in the title.

I hope this guide was helpful and although it is in no way complete, I hope it gives you at least some good information to look at when buying a Civic or parts for your Civic.
