Finding the correct ball joint for a 1988-1999 Chevy truck 4x4 can be tricky, this guide is all about the different designs GM built in these years and how to tell them apart.
Lets brake it down to the years involved: 1988-1995
From 88-95 GM used a riveted lower ball joint on all K1500, K2500 and K3500 4x4. This ball joint is riveted in place with 4 huge rivets, making it difficult to remove without a torch or air tools.
1995 - GM introduced a new lower control arm that was supposed to make the ball joint replacement easier. This new lower control arm is the stamped/welded design that is found on most K1500 and K2500 models through 1999. They still were producing the old control arm with riveted ball joints until mid 1995 so both designs are out there for the 1995 models. The control arm has a forged insert at the end where the ball joint is mounted, this ball joint hole diameter is 45.79mm.
1996-1999 GM introduced the Forged lower control arm that was used on W/T trucks and most one ton and diesel models. This arm also has a press-in ball joint and the hole diameter is 47.89mm.
Both designs from 1995-1999 are still a challenge to replace a ball joint in, as the cast hole that the ball joint presses into is often rusted very tight, or just pressed in with very high pressure. I did come close to snapping a ball joint press on my last 1998 suburban, before I put heat to the metal. regardless all jobs are not the same and have had equal luck getting some out very easily.
