If you are looking for an inexpensive 1980s cruiser the midsize Marquis and LTD are a good choice. Often overlooked by collectors and becoming more rare every day, these are terrific cars to restore and drive. With the 3.8 v6 engine and 3 speed c5 transmission I average 24 mpg in daily driving and have the ride and comfort of a full size car. The parts are cheap to buy and the car is a breeze to repair. Try to find a Brougham model as they are loaded with every creature comfort Ford could fit. The 3.8 is easily swapped out for a 302 or 351 for you power fans. High performance suspension and brake parts for any fox Mustang will bolt on. You would in essence have a four door Mustang. A hot rod with room for the wife and kids. The LTD LX came with lots of performance goodies and a 5.0 and is a true collector car. Avoid the base 2.3 liter 4 cylender models as they are VERY UNDERPOWERED !!! With the A/C on top speed is around 70 mph. Not safe on the highway. The 3.8 is a good balance between fuel economy and power. I have been a ford dealership mechanic for many years and currently own a 1985 Marquis Brougham with every option. I drive this as my daily driver and prefer it to our 2000 Crown Victoria. Same plush ride but with better handleing and economy. 195.000 miles and still going strong. I hope you find this helpfull. Even if you dont buy a ford ,stay away from the Jap cars. BUY AMERICAN !!! and save our countrys jobs. Thanks for your time.
