1935 SILVER DOLLARS........THE FIRST AND THE LAST .  In 1935, after several patterns and trial pieces, Canada finally launched her first silver dollar as a regular circulating coin.  What a great start!  The obverse featuring King George V looking very dapper, turned out to be a one year type.  As in 1936, (the final year of George V coinage) the standard portrait used on all other Canada and British Commonwealth coins was adopted.  South, in the lower "48", 1935 signalled the end of regular circulating silver dollars.  The stunning U.S. Peace dollar, which actually had been suspended in 1928 because of lack of need and an overabundance of silver dollars, both Morgan & Peace were reinstated in 1934 when President Roosevelt suspended private ownership of gold coins.  The American public was required to turn in their gold coins and there were two major forms of reimbursement.  Silver Certificates of various denominations and silver dollars.  The last two Peace dollars combined mintage ( 1935-P, & 1935-S ) was just over 3.5 million pieces, not scarce, but still a better date.  I belive many tens of thousands have since been melted.  Let's compare the trends of the "first" Canada silver dollar and the "last" U.S. silver dollar.  Teh 1935 Canada dollar (mintage 428,707, just over one-tenth the combined 1935 Peace dollar mintage ) trends between  VF-20-MS-60 35.00-65.00.  The 1935 Peace dollar trends almost the same, VF-20-MS-60 25.00-62.50, ( The 1935-S  is a bit pricier about EF, AU-UNC. It's trend is 96.00-250.00)  These are two beautiful coins side by side and are affordable and great to own....THE "FIRST........AND THE "LAST"
